Moxibustion is conducted with various forms of moxa, such as cigars and pellets, etc., and usually in combination with acupuncture. Acupuncture needles are inserted into the skin. The moxa is applied to the tips of these needles and then burned off. This channels heat to the acupuncture points, which Traditional Chinese Medicine believes stimulates the flow of energy. Moxa generally consists of dried and pulverised mugwort leaves (Artemisia vulgaris or Artemisia officinalis).
Aim: to restore the normal flow of energy around the body, eliminating blockages and disturbances
