When can I change health insurer?

As a rule, you can change your basic insurance as of 1 January each year. This means cancelling your current general health insurance and choosing a new health insurer.

Changing basic insurance – it couldn't be easier

  3. Cancel your current basic insurance
    Simply sign the preprepared cancellation letter and send it to us. A different procedure applies at the end of November when the deadline for giving notice is drawing near. In this case, we send you instructions and ask you to take care of cancellation yourself.
  4. New to Switzerland
    Once you have taken out insurance, we need confirmation of your place of residence.
  5. Confirmation
    If everything goes smoothly, you’ll receive confirmation that we’ve accepted you within a few days.

What are the deadlines for switching supplementary insurance?

The notice periods for supplementary insurance may vary. Please check the deadline with your current insurer in good time. When changing supplementary insurance, you need to complete a health questionnaire.

In the case of basic insurance, your cover commences from the date on which the insurance begins – usually 1 January.

In the case of supplementary insurance, there is often a qualifying period. You can only start drawing benefits once a certain waiting period has elapsed, e.g. for dental damage under Dental Insurance or for pregnancy under Hospitalisation Insurance.

Not every health insurer accepts notice of cancellation by email because your signature is important. Send the notice of cancellation to your health insurer in plenty of time and ask for confirmation of receipt. The safest way to send the cancellation letter is by registered post. The cancellation deadline is the last working day of November. If cancelling digitally or by phone, you must do so within opening hours. If giving notice by post, it’s the date of receipt that counts, not the postmark.

  1. Cancel your current general health insurance in writing and take out insurance with the new health insurance provider. To ensure a smooth changeover, you must do all of this in plenty of time.
  2. Tell your medical practice, pharmacist or therapist about your new general health insurance the next time you see them. This will ensure that everything is billed correctly.

No, the following notice periods apply to health insurance:

Basic insurance: The notice period is one month. The deadline is usually the last working day of November.

Supplementary insurance: There are no uniform rules. Supplementary insurance policies usually run for one year and have a three-month notice period. That means notice of cancellation needs to arrive by the last working day of September.
